Taste of Kure...

Kure's most famous dish is Kure Kaiji curry (呉海自カレー kure kaiji karē), which by tradition is served to sailors in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force every Friday. This tradition dates back to the days of the Imperial Japanese Navy as a solution to widespread vitamin B1 deficiency, and it is often said to help sailors keep track of the passage of time when out at sea for extended periods. Each naval vessel has a slightly different recipe for its curry, and several restaurants in Kure have been granted licenses by the respective naval vessels to sell their version of curry to tourists. As such each curry restaurant in Kure uses a slightly different recipe, and often advertise as selling curry based on the recipe of a specific naval vessel.

Getting Around

Kure was one of the main bases for the Imperial Japanese Navy, and continues to host much of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF). In recognition of this history, the city boasts two large naval museums, which are located across the road from one another and a short walk along a covered pathway from Kure's railway station. Kure's most famous dish is Kure Kaiji curry (呉海自カレー kure kaiji karē), which by tradition is served to sailors in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force every Friday.
