Kogi State is a state in North Central Nigeria. The state is nicknamed the "Confluence State" due the fact that the confluence of the River Niger and the River Benue occurs next to its capital, Lokoja. The state is bisected by the Niger River, which flows southward; the Benue River, a significant tributary of the Niger, forms part of the state's northeastern boundary. East of the Niger, the Igala people are the dominant ethnic group, whereas west of the river, the Igbira and Yoruba inhabit. Agriculture is the economy's backbone. Yams, cassava (manioc), rice, sorghum, beans, corn (maize), and cotton are among the most important crops.
