History

A Rich Past

Explore the historical roots that shaped Incheon into what it is today.

Incheon, a major port city in South Korea, has a rich and diverse history that spans centuries. Its strategic location on the west coast, close to Seoul and the Yellow Sea, has made it a key gateway for trade, cultural exchange, and military activity throughout Korean history. Incheon’s history dates back to ancient times. It was part of the Mahan Confederacy during the Three Kingdoms period (1st century BCE - 7th century CE), which later became part of Goguryeo and Baekje, two of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The area was originally called "Michuhol" but was renamed "Inju" during the Goryeo Dynasty(918–1392). During the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties, Incheon was not as prominent as other major cities like Seoul or Kaesong, but it remained an important regional center due to its proximity to the capital. In the Joseon period (1392–1897), the city developed further, with coastal defense systems and trade routes that connected Korea to China and Japan. In 1883, Incheon’s port was officially opened to foreign trade, marking a significant turning point in its development. The port quickly became a center of international commerce and diplomacy, particularly with Japan and Western powers. This period also saw the influx of foreign settlers and the establishment of foreign concessions, contributing to the city’s growth and modernization. The Korean War and the Battle of Incheon: One of the most significant events in Incheon's history occurred during the Korean War (1950–1953)....
