Chikugo (筑後市) is a rural city in the center of the Chikugo Plain in southern Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Funagoya Onsen (船小屋温泉) is said to have been built in the early 1800s after a man with an incurable disease tried to commit suicide in the hot waters but instead was cured. Since then, it is distinguished as being the onsen with the highest concentration of iron in a carbonated spring in Japan. The poet Natsume Soseki came here and wrote a poem about it, as well as Emperor Showa.
